US Open is about to commence on August 29. This year, the prestigious grand slam has been under much controversy as top player Novak Djokovic has been denied entry in the United States due to his unvaccinated status. Despite the several debates that came to surface from legends like John McEnroe and Martina Navratilova in support of the Serb, The government maintained its stance on the vaccine mandates for non-US citizens.

On Thursday, Djokovic took to social media to finally announce his withdrawal from the tournament. He tweeted, “Sadly, I will not be able to travel to NY this time for US Open. Thank you #Nolefam for your messages of love and support. Good luck to my fellow players! I’ll keep in good shape and positive spirit and wait for an opportunity to compete again. See you soon tennis world!” This is the second time that Djokovic has missed a grand slam this year. He was deported from Australia due to the same vaccination guidelines and missed playing on his best surface in Melbourne.

Novak Djokovic is not the first athlete who avoided taking the vaccine. NFL stars like Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers have shown their hesitations about the vaccines. Aaron Rodgers had previously said, “I believe strongly in bodily autonomy and the ability to make choices for your body.”

Recently, Joe Rogan and Aaron Rodgers sat down to discuss the vaccine guidelines on his podcast, the Joe Rogan Experience. Rogan said about Djokovic, “He’s one of the best athletes in the world, I mean the guy’s body is in tip-top condition. None of it makes sense. It defies science and logic.”

With Djokovic out of the US Open, Rafael Nadal is hoping to claim his 23rd grand slam, to further extend his lead over the Serb. Djokovic is certainly having a tough season as so far he has missed two slams and suffered a quarter-final exit at the French Open. He only found stability at Wimbledon where he won his 21st grand slam.
