“Deserves credit as favorite” Alex Corretja names, Novak Djokovic, as the front-runner for the French Open ahead of Rafael Nadal’s questionable form

Novak Djokovic won his sixth title in Rome and completed the milestone of 1000 wins on the ATP in the Italian Open 2022. He has also regained his form just in time for the French Open and will be one of the favorites to lift the trophy at Roland-Garros. There are many different factors going into the French Open, like the recurring foot pain of Rafael Nadal, which in some way played a part in his early exit in Rome. Though Nadal is back on the court, his chronic foot problem might once more come into play in Paris.
Carlos Alcaraz, the world number 6, is in great shape too. He has won two consecutive claycourt titles and defeated both Rafa and Djokovic on his way to the victory in Madrid. Stefanos Tsitsipas has also regained top form, but there might be some concerns about the greek’s matchup against Djokovic as he lost quite tamely in the final at Rome.
Alex Corretja, the former world number 2, has given some insights into what he believes might come into play at the Roland-Garros and the future of the Rafa-Djokovic rivalry.
Novak Djokovic has good chance to end up with more Grand Slams the Rafa
Alex Corretja, a two-time Grand Slam finalist in the French Open talked about how he feels about the Djokovic-Nadal status in the upcoming French Open. Talking to Telegraf, Corretja said about Djokovic:
“He is in a great position before coming to the tournament. I’m not sure if I should call him the exclusive favorite because it depends on whether Nadal will get into his rhythm.”Novak still deserves credit to be the favorite, as we speak.”
About Rafael Nadal and his performance at Roland-Garros, he said:
“We don’t know what Rafa will be like. If he is healthy, we will still have to see what results he will have in the first week. There is no doubt that he will be a dangerous opponent to everyone, because that is Rafael Nadal, the best player of all time on clay.
“It’s always a question of how Rafa is. The question is whether he is healthy or not, that makes a big difference for the future. I think Novak definitely has a good chance to win more Grand Slam titles in the end. Every Grand Slam is a new chance for Djokovic, he showed that he is always good at Wimbledon, the US Open, he loves the Australian Open and he will play each seriously if the opportunity arises.”
Corretja has provided an astute analysis of the current situation and Rafael Nadal will be hoping that his foot pain doesn’t make an appearance during the tournament while Djokovic enters the court as a defending champion with the goal of equalizing Rafa in terms of the number of Grand Slams.
