“Did the right thing in terms of morality” British No.1 Cameron Norrie backs Wimbledon’s decision to ban Russian players

Cameron Norrie the former world number 10 and the current British number 1 will enter the Wimbledon 2022 as the ninth seed. Even though Norrie has not been able to go past the third round, he would hope to do better. After all the field has lost some strength in terms of Russian and Belarusian participants. Though Wimbledon was criticized was most players regarding the ban on the basis of nationality, the AELTC continued with their decision and was consequently punished as Wimbledon was stripped of its ranking points.
This has been an unprecedented event in tennis history and has given rise to a huge divide between the players who feel the decision was right or wrong, but almost everyone seems to agree that ATP and WTA too didn’t do any better as their decision affected everyone’s rankings. Norrie came forward to Wimbledon’s defense in his press conference. He said: “I think it was a tough decision, definitely. Morally, they did the right thing. I like the fact that they showed it pretty clearly.”
Cameron Norrie feels sorry for the Russian players.
Even though Norrie supports the decision by Wimbledon, he said he was sympathetic to his Russian colleagues like world number 1, Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev, who have the potential to win the tournament. He said: “But I feel sorry for some players, especially Medvedev and Rublev because they give themselves to tennis and they are professionals. Obviously, they had a good chance of winning, so I sympathize with them. As a result, given everything that is happening related to the war, I do not mind that Wimbledon did so. This is a difficult situation for everyone.”
About the ranking points, he said: “Obviously, this is a failure, that no one will earn points. There’s nothing at stake, but of course, it’s still a very special tournament. I would certainly like to play with points, but as it is. I don’t have any other attitude to the tournament. So much is happening and I personally can hardly influence it. I am excited about the performance and I am glad that I will be able to compete here.”
