Wimbledon decided to ban the Russian and Belarusian players from the Wimbledon 2022 due to the ongoing war incited by Russia. The decision was largely influenced by the involvement of the British crown in the Wimbledon’s award ceremony. The royal didn’t want to appear as supporters of the war if the players from the concerned countries lifted the trophy at the center court in London.

The Australian tennis player John Millman, a former US Open quarterfinalist, clarified his stance on the whole Wimbledon turmoil. He said, “First, I want to emphasize that I’m against any conflict where people get killed. The Russian-Ukrainian conflict is terrible. My heart is bleeding for the Ukrainians, the Ukrainian players, I hate it. But I hate every conflict. I didn’t like the war in Iraq either when people were dying collateral damage. I don’t like the UK selling bombs to the Saudis while they bomb Yemen. I don’t like the Israel-Palestine conflict, the conflict in Libya, everywhere people die. It’s all nonsense. I also don’t like unilateral decisions,”

Millman also said that Wimbledon didn’t give an opportunity for a range of solutions to be discussed, they just went forward with their own decision which was quite unfair to the players. He said:“There was an opportunity to have the Russians and the Belarusians at Wimbledon. You had two options – recommendations, not even rules, made by the UK Government. One, to sign a declaration and to play, the other to ban. Without any consultation, a unilateral decision was made to ban them from playing. It’s just against everything that’s tennis. I have a problem with that lack of communication. “

Millman further added: “Players from the Council, representatives of players in the ATP management were not consulted until a decision was made. The Russians and Belarusians were not even asked if they would sign the declaration before the decision was made. We’re talking about their safety, they weren’t even asked if they’d sign. And that’s where the reigning champions make mistakes in tennis, at grand slam level, because it should be a partnership.”

There was a slip-up from the Wimbledon’s side, and that has led to another harsh response by the ATP and the WTA effect. All that communication gap has snowballed into the biggest disarray the tennis world has ever faced.
