Diego Schwartzman, the Argentine sensation who is currently ranked at World No. 104, recalls when the football great Lionel Messi called Rafael Nadal’s 2018 French Open victory “lucky”. For the uninitiated, Lionel Messi is one of the best football players in the world, with a record of one of the most goals scored in La Liga. Messi, who is interested in tennis, had earlier spoken about Nadal.
For context, Diego Schwartzman was playing against Nadal in the quarterfinals of the 2018 French Open (also known as Roland Garros). He was leading by a set and a break when rain interrupted the game.
After that, the Spanish professional came back with absolute dominance and took the next three sets as well as the match. The final score was 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, and with this, Nadal went on to the semi-finals and soon went on to bag the 2018 French Open with pure class and dominance.
The first time I met him, it was before the World Cup in Russia in 2018. I lost to Rafa in the quarter-finals at Roland Garros and I was a set and break up. I had my flight from Barcelona and the Argentinians were doing their preparation for the World Cup And the first thing he said to me was, ‘How lucky was Rafa?Schwartzman said in the ultimate tennis showdown.
Interestingly, with the rain washing away the game, both players returned the next day, and evidently, Nadal was on top of Diego throughout the match. He further added:
‘How lucky was Rafa with the rain?’ Because I was a set and a break ahead and the rain stopped the match. I was leading 6-4 3-1 and break point for 4-1 and after that we played like 15 minutes and then came back the next day. And after that I lost like, it was too easy for him playing with the sun at noon.
Diego Schwartzman shocked as Messi greeted the Argentine with a warm welcome
Argentine Diego Schwartzman, the 31-year-old tennis player, considers Lionel Messi his idol and really respects the footballer. The tennis star clearly remembers the time he met Messi after the 2018 French Open.
Yes I met him a few years before but even if you meet him when you see him it’s like, too much respect. You don’t want to say anything. It’s like, ‘Okay, hello Leo.’ You don’t want to ask for anything.Diego said in the interview
Both Argentinian stars are icons in their respective sporting leagues. While Messi has a huge name in his sport, Diego has yet to show his full potential and rise to the top of tennis.
