Spanish tennis ace Rafael Nadal does not look happy with the way tennis is being played today. The 22-time Grand Slam champion feels the sport has become more about exhibiting physical strength rather than strategizing and executing tactics and this is not how the Spaniard wants to play his tennis. He also criticized the current players for adopting the same style of play.
Notably, as Rafael Nadal returns to the tennis court after almost a year, all eyes will be on his performance against the top players in the world currently. It will be interesting to see if the current style of play overpowers the old-school tennis or if Nadal wins over by doing what he does best- strategize and implement.
But that will be a discussion for later, as now the Spaniard has raised his objection against the current style of play. Nadal feels the current crop of players only think about hitting hard and they are not wrong to do it because that is yielding the results. The Spanish ace feels that it does not require a lot of practice to find the winning shot.
It has evolved into a tennis of hitting harder, of hitting without thinking. It does not require point preparation to find the winning shot. Most of them play similarly (…) I don't like it. I like the tactics.Rafael Nadal has expressed disappointment via El Pais.
Rafael Nadal already troubling youngsters
Rafael Nadal is returning to action with the Brisbane International. While the Spaniard will face the likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic only at the 2024 Australian Open, Nadal is already troubling youngsters with his impressive gameplay.
World No.8 Holger Rune who is counted among the next future superstars talked about Nadal’s gameplay after the Danish ace spent some time playing against the 22-time Grand Slam champion in a practice session. Rune looks stunned by the way Nadal is moving on the court and the Dane feels that it was the hardest practice he has had in the last few months.
I think the intensity he brings is incredible. Like, I've been playing I think a very intense pre-season and a very intense end of the season last year, and that was probably the hardest practice I've had the last half year, I would say.Holger Rune said in the pre-tournament press conference.
Notably, Rune is the top seed at the ATP 250 tournament in Brisbane. Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal has entered the tournament as a wildcard player. The 37-year-old will be opening his campaign against a qualifier. And if all goes well for Nadal, the chances of him facing Rune in the summit clash or the semifinals are really high.
