In view of the ongoing atrocities in Ukraine, Wimbledon is expected to announce the exclusion of all players from Russia and Belarus from this summer’s Championships. The decision was taken before the tournament’s annual press conference, which is set to take place next week, and where the topic is sure to come up.
The WTA and ATP Tours have been told that a significant number of their best players would be unable to compete in SW19. The measures are impending, according to sources close to the game, with men’s world No. 2 Daniil Medvedev being the most high-profile player to be affected. It is thought that the players’ associations were only informed of their plans late Tuesday.
It’s unclear whether this will apply to other grass-court championships in the UK, although Wimbledon is unaffiliated with the ATP and WTA Tours. The French Open is currently not following suit, at least for the time being, as players from the two impacted nations are on their entrance lists.
Fans have mixed reactions to the ban by Wimbledon
The news left fans conflicted and many were unhappy and disappointed with the decision and claim it is not the player’s fault just because the country is at war. The Ukraine-Russia war and the peace talks do not sound like they went well and there is the possibility of a full-blown war in the near future.
The Wimbledon or the fans’ claimed the players are suffering for what their country has done and this is injustice according to the fans. According to Wimbledon, they are taking a stand against Ukraine-Russia in their own way.
