“Does he have Covid again?” Novak Djokovic labelled ‘SELFISH’ as he withdraws from Davis Cup Group Stage citing ‘personal reasons’
Novak Djokovic
21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic is currently out of action ever since he won the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. The reason for his absence has been his non-vaccinated status against Covid-19 and the events being currently played in the USA where unvaccinated foreigners are not allowed to enter.
As a result of this law, Djokovic could not play the 2022 US Open where he lost 1200 points having been the runner-up last year and has slipped a place down in the rankings and could further fall to World No. 8 if Cameron Norrie is able to enter the quarter-finals of the major.
“If we make it to Malaga, Novak Djokovic will join us,”: Serbian Team Captain
With the US Open Leg about to end, fans expected Djokovic to return to action but the Serbian has presented disappointing news as he withdraws his name from the Group stages of the 2022 Davis Cup despite having played in the Finals last year and looking to lead another campaign for his country.
“Novak Djokovic won’t be playing Davis Cup in Valencia. He won’t play due to personal reasons. He was there for the national team countless times, but this time he can’t. If we make it to Malaga, he will join us,” Serbian captain Viktor Troicki told Sportski Journal.
Davis Cup matches are scheduled in the week following the conclusion of the US Open but Djokovic won’t be in action. While some reports have emerged over Djokovic’s brother Djorde’s marriage being the reason for Novak’s absence, there has been no official confirmation on it. Fans however remained upset and took to trolling the Serbian for not representing his country.
While the official confirmation is yet to come on whether Novak’s brother’s wedding is the reason for his absence, Serbians will hope that their national team qualifies the Group Stage so that Novak can return to the Finals at the end of the season and bring home a second Davis Cup title for Serbia.
