“Does this law makes sense!” Daniil Medvedev weighs in on Brittney Griner’s trial, compares it to Novak Djokovic’s expulsion
Brittney Griner and Daniil Medvedev
World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev kicked off his US Open campaign with a stunning first-round win over Stefan Kozlov. He defeated Kozlov in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, 6-0. Daniil Medvedev has high hopes for the last grand slam of the year. Medvedev reached the final of 2022 Australian Open but lost to Rafael Nadal in a draining 5-set match. In addition to this, Medvedev suffered an early exit at the French Open. He also missed the Wimbledon Championship because of their ban on Russian and Belarusian players.
In the post-match press conference, Medvedev reflected back on his game and talked about preparing for the second round. Towards the end, he discussed the Brittney Griner controversy and briefly talked about how some of the laws affect the athletes in peculiar ways. He further mentioned former World No. 1 Novak Djokovic who was denied entry to the United States due to his unvaccinated status.
The situation is for sure not easy: Daniil Medvedev on the Brittney Griner Trial
Brittney Griner is a two-time Olympic gold medalist. She plays for the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA and for Russia’s UMMC Ekaterinburg. She was arrested in Russia in February for carrying a vape and hashish oil on her person. She’s now facing trial on drug charges which carries a prison sentence of up to ten years. The US government is looking at a potential prisoner swap situation between USA and Russia to bring Griner back.
Medvedev commented on Griner’s potential imprisonment, “I don’t know the exact full details I mean the situation is for sure not easy I mean when somebody goes to prison.”
He then compared it to Djokovic’s situation. He said, “I do think it’s quite comparable to other situations like let’s talk about Novak you know he couldn’t come in the country for whatever reason different laws and we can say does this law make sense because Americans can come back without the vaccine and nova cannot come here and he doesn’t want to live in the USA he wants just to play the tennis tournament.”
Medvedev said he is not aware of the whole fiasco but that ‘a law is a law.’
