Regarded as one of the best in the world a few years ago, Dominic Thiem was caught hold by the ATP Tour media team before his practice session. The Austrian star was once enjoying the same seat as Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic but injuries have let him down. Thiem has now gone down the rankings and is not even close to the Top 50 players in the world at the moment.
Ranked 94th in the world, Thiem was asked a couple of questions regarding from whom would he like to steal the attributes of the sport namely the best forehand, the best backhand, the toughest serve, the best celebration, and so on. When the cameras kicked in Thiem was quick enough to get his favorites lined up as he mentioned Nadal as the best forehand, Djokovic as the best backhand, and John Isner‘s serve as the toughest one in the sport.
But the main highlight of the session was that the former World No.3 was when he talked about Roger Federer. He rated the legend as the best player in three sections: the best slice, the best touch, and also the player with the best net gameplay sense. Thiem and Federer have faced quite a couple of times in their career, with Thiem beating Federer on five occasions compared to Federer’s two.
Has Dominic Thiem’s downfall been the harshest one in the last decade?
As the quote goes, “The saddest thing in life is wasted talent” Thiem has been nothing but a talent that has gone to waste. Not many would have expected this downfall to happen after Thiem lifted the US Open in the midst of twenty thousand people at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center way back in 2019. But injuries have pushed the Austrian far down the pecking order and he has never really found his form back after the wrist surgery.
He was winning matches for fun a couple of years ago beating the Big Three as well. When Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic were the only players to be dominating the sport, Thiem arrived in the sport at the right time with the hope of breaking the dominance. But looks like the great Austrian will have to live up to the tag of “One-Slam wonder” as he still continues his search for his run of form.
