Dominic Thiem, the star of 2020, continues his harsh journey to recovery as he grapples with the lingering effects of his wrist injury. After his recent tournament loss, Thiem gave an honest admission of this fact.
The 30-year hasn’t been able to get back on track after suffering a wrist injury in 2021, which sidelined him for a couple of months. Even in 2024, the World No. 3 hasn’t been able to make a mark. Losing at a challenger level at the Estoril Open, the former US Open winner continued the unfortunate losing streak.
Thiem lost in the second round against Richard Gasquet. The close match saw the Frenchman coming out on top 6-4, 7(8)-6(6). As the Austrian reflected on his match in an Instagram post, he made a few remarks on his performance, whilst finding positivity.
Today's match wasn't bad, but I still need to find my game rhythm. As I said in my last interview, I'm not the player of 2020 anymore. I have to deal with the current situation, with the fact that my wrist doesn’t give me the strength it used to. I have to be honest with myself. The pain is a lot less compared to the last few weeks, but like I said, I haven’t regained my full strength.Dominic Thiem wrote on Instagram
While there is a flicker of positivity in his self-assessment, the wrist injury still poses an enormous challenge. It’s been almost two years, and the effects of the injury still linger around.
Dominic Thiem admits to not being the same person he once was
At the Estoril Open, an improved Dominic Thiem took the courts. Though he lost in the second round, the Austrian was pleased with his performance in the first round.
After the first-round match, Thiem gladly announced that he was no longer injured. Intending to improve his ranking, the 2020 US Open winner is playing more challenger-level tournaments to bump up his ranking. But above all, Thiem has realized that he is not the same player he once was.
It’s a different galaxy. It’s a lot of different things--I had a bit more power, more confidence. I simply played better tennis, it was more fluid. There are a lot of differences, but I’ve stopped comparing myself to the player I was before.Dominic Thiem said via Tennis Majors
Despite many failures along the way, Thiem continues to fight to rise to the ranks. At the start of the year, the Austrian had announced that he would retire if he could not enter the top 50. A tough challenge for the 30-year-old, but he is slowly realizing the need for change to his current situation.
