Dominic Thiem faced straight defeats in the Ultimate Tennis Showdown in Oslo on Friday. Firstly, he was defeated in sudden death by Holger Rune, and then he lost to Alexander Bublik in the fourth quarter. 

The Austrian hasn’t had the best start to his UTS campaign. Notably, this is his second outing in the competition, with his last being at UTS1 (2020).

There have been a lot of reactions among the fans for his nickname ‘Thieminho’ among the fans as well as the pundits. He opened up about his new nickname in the UTS. In a recent interview with Tennis Weekly Podcast, the 2020 US Open winner revealed the secret behind his new nickname.

Besides, he also explained why he discarded the title of ‘Dominator‘, which was his nickname in the last edition he played. 

Yeah, many people wanted to give me The Dominator. But that is way too, too many people call me that way from the moment I came on tour. So, I chose Thieminho. I put it since very long time on my football jerseys. And on the FIFA career on the PlayStation is also my name. So, I thought that's a good one.

Dominic Thiem hasn’t had the best of times in 2024 so far

Thiem hasn’t had the best of times recently. Even in 2024, he was eliminated in the first round of both tournaments he played.

Firstly, he was beaten by Rafael Nadal in the Brisbane International. And then, at the Australian Open, he faced a first-round elimination at the hands of Felix Auger Aliassime.

Even at the UTS, he didn’t turn up the way he would have wished. The Austrian will be in a break before he makes an appearance on the court at the Kiskut Open for the clay season.
