Dominic Thiem’s coach leaves warning note for Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal months ahead of 2023 Australian Open

Former US Open winner Dominic Thiem’s conditioning coach recently revealed in an opinion article that the Austrian is making fast recovery from injuries that pushed back his career for the last two years and that the likes of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal may be surprised when they face him at the 2023 Australian Open.

Thiem recently reached the semifinals of the Gijon Open where he put up a decent fight against eventual winner Andrey Rublev.“He’s fresh, he’s ready, he’s fit and he’s pain-free. With another really big training block in November and December, I think he will be at another level by Australia,” Jez Green, who has previously even worked with Andy Murray, recently wrote in a Tennishead column.

“He will have full power and be even stronger, fitter, and faster than ever before. He’s never really done a strength program scientifically, so we’ve done a lot of strength work in order to make him much more explosive. I think he’s going to end up looking a little different than before, although maybe not dramatically.  It’s not going be dramatic, but people will say: ‘Hey, he looks strong’. Everyone around is starting to notice this body is changing,” Green elaborated further in his article.

“He’s very fresh and has very good motivation. He can have five more years left in tennis, so he has very good possibilities. Make no mistake, Novak and Rafa are not going to want to see a fully fit Dominic Thiem back!” wrote Green.

Thiem recently revealed in an interview that he believes the likes of Carlos Alcaraz, Frances Tiafoe and Jannik Sinner have turned the tennis world upside down with their fast style of play, making it tougher for other players to adapt to the new level.

The Austrian player also insinuated that such players are in fact better than the Big 3 trio of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, who according to him were too defensive or cautious.

“Players like Alcaraz, Sinner or Tiafoe have changed tennis. They play very fast and have taken the sport to a new level. Compared to them, the big three were almost defensive or cautious. This change certainly affects other tennis players, who need to be able to change their playing pattern a bit each time they play against them,” Thiem told The Standard.
