Dominic Thiem

Dominic Thiem, the 28-year-old Austrian has finally started to find his form again after coming back from an injury that ruled him out of playing for 10 months. Going 14 months without a win, Thiem recorded his first one against Emil Ruusuvuori at the Swedish Open where he went on to the quarter-finals after beating Ruusuvuori and Roberto Bautista Agut but eventually losing out to Sebastian Baez in the quarter-finals.

Doing on a winning streak at the Swiss Open, Thiem has won three out of three matches at the tournament and has progressed to the semi-finals. Coming as a surprise to many was the Austrian’s absence from the entry list of the US Open, he decided not to use his protected ranking to take entry into the tournament.

Dominic Thiem was supposed to defend his US Open title last year before a wrist injury completely caught him off guard and derailed his season, ruling him out for ten months. Despite being back to his winning ways, the Austrian didn’t use his protected ranking and that was evident when his name wasn’t on the entry list of the upcoming US Open.

He has been using his protected rankings to enter many tournaments but the fact that he didn’t use it for the US Open means that he is probably going to receive a wild card entry into the tournament. Winning it last in 2020 and not being able to do so in 2021 due to the injury, Thiem will be looking to go into the tournament with high spirits considering that he is given a wild card entry in it.

Thiem has soared into the sem-finals of the Swiss Open after beating Juan Pablo Varillas by 6-4, 6-3 as he continued his winning streak today. The win saw him reach his first tour-level semi-finals of this season and he will hope that the streak continues and he can go all the way and win the title.
