Donna Vekic, the No.3 seed at the Linz Open, has a great opportunity to make herself known with her tennis. With no top 10 players participating in this tournament, other stars have the chance to gain some valuable points and try to improve their respective ranking.
Utilizing the big stage to showcase her talent, Croatian Vekic continued her convincing run at the Open. She recently beat the in-form Dayana Yastremska, who was on a breakout run at the Australian Open. Having made her way to her maiden Grand Slam semi-finals, the 23-year-old was the one to watch out for in Austria.
Unfortunately, she was outdone by No.3 seed Vekic. Beating the semi-finalist in straight sets, the 27-year-old made her way into the last eight. After a splendid match, the Croatian showed the fans another talent of hers. She brought her artistic nature in front of the Austrian crowd as the interviewers brought out a self-portrait of her. It was a hilarious drawing of a face with hair with her signature next to it. “Very minimalistic,” remarked the interviewer.
About to gift it to a fan, the 27-year-old made a joke about feeling sorry for the person who gets it. With some Croatian supporters on the sidelines, Vekic went over and gave it to them. Showcasing her artistic talent, she thoroughly entertained the fans.
Donna Vekic takes down Dayana Yastremska in straight sets in her first matchup of the tournament
Having entered the Linz Open as the No.3 seed, Donna Vekic got to start her tournament with 16 people remaining. With only eight people to move forward, the Croatian was up against Dayana Yastremska.
After a historical Australian Open run, Yastremska was one of the favorites entering the tournament. She won her first match against Erika Andreeva in three sets to make it to the next stage. Unfortunately, she was all around Vekic and did not stand a chance to come out as a winner.
Having won 6-1,6-1, Vekic advanced to the last 8. After dropping nine ranks since the Australian Open, the 27-year-old looks to run deep in the WTA 500 and gain some valuable points. If the Croatian wins the tournament, she gets a major boost up 10 places, getting her closer to the top 10.
