“Don’t reflect the current performance” Stefanos Tsitsipas speaks against giving too much importance to the ATP ranking

Stefanos Tsitsipas

Stefanos Tsitsipas slipped from the number 4 to 5th on the ATP ranking after an unexpected loss in the fourth round of the French Open 2022. Tsitsipas was expected to make it to the quarterfinal effortlessly, he was also a favorite to make it to the final as his side of the draw was much easier. But, he was shocked by the 18-year-old Danish, Holger Rune who easily defeated Tsitsipas in four sets.

Tsitsipas is currently playing in the Stuttgart Open chasing his first ATP title on grass. Grass has been his weakest surface as he has not even reached the final of any grass-court tournament. He has also been ousted in the Wimbledon in the first round in the last two editions. His best performance at the Championships was a fourth-round appearance in 2018.

He has very clear goals for each surface of winning a certain number of matches. He also said that he doesn’t give much importance to the overall ATP rankings, saying that the race to the ATP Tour finals is much more important. Tsitsipas has made it to the last three ATP Tour Finals being consistently in the top 8 performers of the year. He had also won the ATP Tour finals in 2019 defeating Dominic Thiem in the final.

Stefanos Tsitsipas says the ATP finals race is more important.

Stefanos Tsitsipas believes that the current performance measure is much more important than the ranking. In the press conference at ATP Stuttgart, he said:

“For me, the classification of the Race is the most important. I don’t give much importance to the other rankings, because for me they don’t reflect the current performance. All my attention is on the Race. This is where we see how we have progressed. I try to collect as many points as possible on each surface, but of course: with different surfaces, different objectives.”

This assessment by Stefanos seems very correct because Matteo Berrettini, an established top player, and ATP Tour Finals player is set to take a huge hit in ranking as he would slide lower than the top 20 from number 10 after the Wimbledon was stripped of points leading Berrettini to lose 1200 ranking points directly. But, if the player’s performance is good enough the whole season, they can enter the ATP Tour finals even after being ranked out of top 10 as the ATP Tour Finals feature the 8 best performers of the whole year for a year-end title.
