Holger Rune is a phenomenal young talent and he has shown some glimpses of his talent. He had won the French Open Junior. Ranked number 70 in the world, Rune is the current Danish No. 1 player in men’s singles. Rune was stopped in his previous campaign, the Monte-Carlo Masters by a fellow Scandinavian Casper Ruud.
Rune’s current tournament the BMW Open in Germany is going quite well as he brushed aside Jiri Lehecka in the round of 32 and met the current world number 3, Alexander Zverev in the round of 16. Zverev has been having quite frustrating tournaments as he was knocked out of the quarterfinals in Miami and again in the semifinals of Monte-Carlo Open by Stefanos Tsitsipas. He was the favourite in this tournament and looking for a title here in his home country but was shocked by the teenager 6-3, 6-2.
Looking for the first title, Holger Rune enters the quarterfinals
Holger Rune trashed the predictions as he beat the two-time ATP Tour Finals Champion in straight sets. Zverev became Rune’s first ATP Top 10 scalp and this win will provide a great boost to the young talent. Rune is chasing his first singles title in Munich and with this win, he has entered the quarterfinals. This win should be a warning enough for Rune‘s upcoming opponents to not take him lightly.
The Scandinavian would be extremely pleased with this win and the early birthday present, but he will be looking forward to the quarterfinal match and the actual birthday present in the form of a semifinal ticket in Munich. If Rune manages to reach the finals, he might be faced with Ruud again, who will be playing his ‘Round of 16’ match tomorrow.
The fans are quite impressed with this young talent’s win over Zverev. Rune in his on-court interview expressed his happiness and pleasure at this “Early Present” before the youngster. Rune said, “I enjoyed it,” he said as he addressed the crowd. “Obviously it was tough, especially the first set when we played lots of long rallies. It was really exhausting but I tried to give the audience a great match because Zverev is an unbelievable player, so thank you very much for the support.”
