“Elena stole my title” Ons Jabeur left heartbroken after a brutal loss in the final of Wimbledon 2022

Elena Rybakina, Ons Jabeur

The Ladies’ Wimbledon final between Ons Jabeur and Elena Rybakina was one for the history books as they both marked their respective country’s first Grand Slam final appearance. It was a great battle between contrasting styles as the big-hitting Rybakina was faced with the ever-crafty Jabeur. Ons took the first set as Rybakina was quite erratic in her service, which is the strongest point of her game and she also committed a huge number of unforced errors.

But Rybakina calmed down after losing the first set. She played much more freely, it was as if she realized she had nothing to lose and began putting a lot of pressure on Jabeur who was finally getting frustrated and her game took a dip. Rybakina was ruthless as she won the next two sets 6-2 to win the title 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. She became the first Kazakh player to win a grand slam title and left Jabeur heartbroken. It was the first time in the fifteen Wimbledon finals that the winner of the first set lost the title.

Her and her team great job she deserved this and hopefully next time will be mine. I won’t [be able to] do this without my team there, they always believed in me and pushed me to do more, so thank you for your support, thank you for believing in me.”

On being told that she would be back to win the title, Jabeur said: “Elena stole my title, but it’s okay” “I feel really sad, but it’s tennis – there is only one winner.
