In an unexpected turn of events, Swedish tennis star Mikael Ymer recently announced his retirement from professional tennis. It happened after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) found him guilty of anti-doping rule violations. Mikael’s decision to retire from the sport has sparked much speculation, with his older brother, Elias Ymer, providing insight into the situation.
Giving an interview to ‘Tennis Talk‘, Ymer talked about his sports and tour life, he was asked to shed some light on the entire incident with his brother. The interviewer asked him about his condition of Mikael to which he replied, “He said what he said. He has retired, and we have to accept it. If somebody feels that it is enough, we have to respect it. He made the decision, and that’s his choice.“
Many in the tennis fraternity were taken aback by Mikael’s quick retirement. Elias understood the complexities of the issue and stressed the need to honor his brother’s decision, even if it was unexpected. “He is in a tough position. But when you come to that conclusion, you have thought about it a lot. I respect his choice. Nothing else,” he stated.
Elias revealed that, while there was an element of surprise, he recognized that Mikael had likely deliberated extensively before making such a momentous decision. He reiterated his respect for his brother’s choice and emphasized the importance of understanding the challenges Mikael faced.
Mikael’s struggles with anti-doping regulations
Mikael Ymer’s retirement announcement, just at the age of 24, stunned the tennis world. The revelation, made on his Twitter account, marks the end of a turbulent phase in his career. He was slapped with a suspension for three violations of the daily whereabouts rules, a vital component of anti-doping procedures on the ATP Tour.
His suspension began in January 2022, when a triple “no-show” violation in April, August, and November of 2021 was discovered. This initial penalty was followed by an 18-month suspension. It cast a pall on the potential future of the 2021 Winston-Salem tournament finalist.
Mikael luck, however, took an unexpected turn when an independent panel freed him in June 2022. He looked to have successfully handled the difficulties provided by the initial ban. However, his reprieve was short-lived, as he was suspended once more, this time by the CAS during the summer.
In its appeal of the prior verdict, it sought a two-year suspension. Mikael became involved in a complex web of legal actions and anti-doping legislation as a result of this legal volley. His punishment was based on how the third “no-show” infringement was interpreted.
Mikael insisted that he had not purposefully broken the rules, but had been caught off guard by an unforeseeable incident. According to him, he was assigned to a different hotel than the one initially reserved by his agency, without being notified. As a result, he had failed to update his mandated daily whereabouts as required.
