Tennis couples are now a rare sight these days with stories regarding their moments revolving all around social media. Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina and French veteran Gael Monfils have been together for quite a long time and are regarded as one of the strongest duos in the sport. The couple had welcomed a baby last year and since then it has been a story worth foretelling for Svitolina.
The couple has always been a rock in the back for each other in times of hardship and also their go-to partner during practice sessions. A recent video has gone viral where Elina and Gael seem to be enjoying each other’s company at the same time while playing tennis. With both players playing at the ongoing Citi Open, they have been training alongside each other to prepare themselves.
Monfils challenged his wife to ace him five times from the service line. While Svitolina gets the first serve absolutely spot on giving Monfils no chance to return the serve, she then goes on to miss all the rest of the services. Monfils laughs at the camera saying, “The first one, it was completely lucky”. Svitolina after a string of failed services gives up saying, “Five times is impossible”.
How have Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina fared at the Citi Open so far?
Both Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina had traveled to Washington in good spirits with the hope of doing something outstanding. After Svitolina’s impressive run of form in the last few tournaments, she was regarded as one of the favorites leading up to the tournament. She made it to the quarter of the French Open and then managed a semi-final finish at the recently played Wimbledon Championships.
Taking inspiration from her wife, Monfils began his conquest in great fashion beating homeboy Bjorn Fratangelo in straight sets by 6-3, 6-4. On the other hand, Svitolina’s first match at the Citi Open was a tough one as she faced Victoria Azarenka, the same opponent she beat at Wimbledon in the round of 16 matchup. She had a huge task on her hands playing against a Belarus player and yet again dominated Azarenka by 7-6, 6-4.
