Wimbledon semi-finalist and World No. 27 Elina Svitolina has been constantly in the headlines of several news pieces after her impressive performance at the competition. She is the epitome of hard work, and she has proved to the world that perseverance can help one achieve great success.
After talking about how much she has suffered due to Russia’s invasion of her country, she has now been working deliberately in order to help her nation in every way possible. After the commencement of the competition, she has now started working for the future of her nation. She is also an ambassador of the United24 organization, a platform launched by the Ukrainian president in order to raise money for the Russian-Ukrainian War.
She raised over 130,000 euros for the reconstruction of a destroyed residential building in Irpin. She is also organizing a youth tennis tournament at the end of this month in Kyiv to help the children amidst all these hard times.
Svitolina talked about this initiative saying, “It wasn’t easy. So many courts have been destroyed, and we had to find one with a bomb shelter, in case there is an attack on the city. But I’m really happy that the tournament is going ahead and we have over 100 players signed up already. We just want to bring a small light in the tunnel for these kids – many of whom have lost family and friends and have been through so much.”
Svitolina has been a shining light for her nation in these times of distress:
Svitolina has been fighting against the Russians and standing rightfully beside her countrymen in times of distress. As an active member of the United24 organization, she has constantly been in touch with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about their plan to make the country a better place for their habitats. She has also been working for a long time, thereby reiterating her plans to put a ban on Russian and Belarusian players.
Already an Olympic medal winner for her country, Svitolina talked about this issue in a previous interview saying, “It’s going to be very sad, and the wrong message would be sent to the world if Olympics going to stay with the decision to put them (Russia and Belarus) under a neutral flag.
Continuing his train of thoughts, he further added, “I don’t think this is the right decision. You can see that in Russia, sports are connected to the government. Boycott would be one of the options because obviously what Russian army is doing to Ukrainian people, to Ukraine, it’s a horrible thing for us.”
