Former tennis legend Chris Evert was overcome with emotion as she witnessed a remarkable upset at the 2023 Wimbledon tournament. With tears streaming down her face, Evert, who was commentating on the match, watched in awe as wildcard entry Elina Svitolina defeated the reigning world number one, Iga Swiatek, in a thrilling three-set battle. Svitolina’s hard-fought 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-2 victory not only secured her place in the semifinals but also left Evert in a state of profound admiration and sentiment.
Evert dubbed it as one of the most emotionally charged encounters she had ever witnessed on the Centre Court. She emphasized the challenges that Svitolina had surmounted to reach such heights of success. Svitolina’s journey was marked by extraordinary hurdles, including the ongoing conflict in her homeland of Ukraine. Moreover, she had recently become a mother, welcoming her first child in October, and made a courageous return to the professional tour in April after taking a maternity break.
“She had a baby and her husband has been so supportive of her but she’s been going through a very sad time with what’s happening back in Ukraine with her family. To see her so inspired by this and playing so well is just very touching for me,” said Evert while speaking on ESPN.
As per Svitolina, playing against Swiatek was difficult for her as both players held enormous respect and regard for one another. Svitolina praised Swiatek’s achievements and her enormous contributions to Ukraine. Swiatek usually plays her matches, adoring a blue and yellow ribbon on her cap, which stands for the Ukrainian flag.
“It was a much tougher game, I would say, because she’s a great person, she’s a big champion. She’s done so much, and is doing still so much for Ukraine. We really admire her in Ukraine. In the way when you’re playing your good buddy, it’s tough because you don’t want to see her/him losing,” said Svitolina after her match.

Elina Svitolina, a wildcard entry, makes her way into the semifinal
In a remarkable turn of events, Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina, who entered Wimbledon as a wildcard, defied all expectations by securing a spot in the semi-finals.
Surprisingly, Svitolina’s unexpected success at Wimbledon disrupted her plans to attend Harry Styles’ performance in Vienna the weekend prior. As her winning streak continued, she found herself on the Centre Court, captivating the audience with her exceptional display of skill. Despite trailing 3-5 in the first set, Svitolina’s remarkable serving and unwavering composure allowed her to stage an impressive comeback.
In the upcoming Wimbledon semi-finals, Elina Svitolina is poised to take on Czech player Marketa Vondrousova. If Svitolina manages to secure victory in this match, she could potentially find herself in a unique and somewhat delicate situation, facing off against Belarussian player Aryna Sabalenka in the finals, provided Sabalenka triumphs over Ons Jabeur.
The match will be interesting to watch as Svitolina has been very vocal against the Russian-Ukraine war and has refused to shake hands with Russians and Belarussians players.
