At a changeover during her second round at the US Open, Elina Svitolina made a heartfelt inquiry to the chair umpire. The Ukrainian captured hearts with her question as she asked if her husband, Gael Monfils‘ match had started.
On her part, Svitolina clashed with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in a thrilling match that lasted nearly three hours on Thursday. After losing the first set, the 28-year-old made a comeback by winning the subsequent sets. She beat her Russian counterpart, scoring 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 against her.
During a changeover in between the match, Svitolina asked the chair umpire if they were aware whether her husband, French tennis star Gael Monfils, had started with his second-round clash. “Can you tell me if my husband started his match on Grandstand?,” Svitolina asked. The former World No. 3’s innocent inquiry left fans swooning over the couple.
Svitolina had married her husband, French tennis player, Gael Monfils, back in 2021. The two started dating each other in 2019 and got engaged in April two years later. Elina gave birth to the couple’s daughter in April this year. She is set on reclaiming her position with her steady rise up the WTA Rankings.
Elina Svitolina talks about leaving daughter at home as she competes at US Open
Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils are one of the few couples who are both competing in the US Open 2023. The former third seed revealed the reason behind the difficult decision she and her husband made of leaving her daughter Skai behind. “We decided for the sake of her health to leave her at home, unfortunately. We miss her really much because this is like the last push now. It’s been one month now that we haven’t seen her. We FaceTime every single day. But, yeah, it’s not easy,” the Ukrainian said.
Svitolina successfully beat her Russian opponent, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, to make her way into the third round of the Grand Slam. The former World No. 3 will now face the current third seed, Jessica Pegula, in what fans expect to be a thrilling match on Friday, September 1.
