Elina Svitolina has been one of Ukraine’s top tennis stars and was World No.3 at a point in her career. She has been missing out on tennis for quite some time due to her pregnancy and mental and physical health. Svitolina has made her come back to tennis as she beat Martina Trevisan in the first round of the 2023 French Open.

Svitolina’s first match at a major tournament since the 2022 Australian Open went quite well as she won with a score of 6-2, 6-2. She also won her 17th WTA title at Strasbourg last week.

Svitolina’s fellow Ukrainian player Marta Kostyuk refused to shake hands with Aryna Sabalenka after their first-round match on May 28th. Sabalenka is Belarusian and Belarus is a military ally of Russia and hence the gesture by Kostyuk. Kostyuk’s refusal to shake hands made the crowd at the Court Philippe Chatrier to boo her. Elina Svitolina has been supporting Ukraine in every way she can and recently donated her Strasbourg prize money to Ukrainian children in need.

Svitolina said, “We are focusing on so many, you know, things like empty words, empty things that are not helping the situation, not helping anything.” She thinks that all this drama and spats between the players of the affected nationalities are meaningless. This is drawing away the attention from the actual problem, that is the war. Svitolina wants to focus on helping Ukrainians in need. There are kids who lost their parents, women who lost their husbands, families who lost their homes, and people who lost their limbs. Svitolina took a dig at targeted individuals for being so petty and focusing on media attention instead of actually helping those in need.

Svitolina’s triumphant comeback at the French Open was marked by her comfortable victory over Martina Trevisan in a match that just lasted over an hour. Trevisan reached the semi-finals of the 2022 French Open and this match was expected to be a close bout.

Rennae Stubbs, however, was not surprised at Elina Svitolina’s victory and wrote on social media, “Nah! I would have been shocked if Trevisan had won. Elina is a WAY better player & Trevisan had 1 awesome tournament last year. This is the beauty of pro tennis! To be great u have to be consistent every year! It’s what separates the top 100 & top 10! Elina is a top 10 player.”

Svitolina’s performances since her return have caught the attention of the tennis world. The fans and the pundits are realizing, again, her quality as a player and her ability to compete at the top of the game.
