The ‘supermom’ Elina Svitolina has been playing at a very high level at Wimbledon 2023 by taking out all of her opponents. In the first round, she knocked out the legendary Venus Williams. In the latest round of 16, she knocked Victoria Azarenka, who had a lead of 5-0, against Elina. In the post-match press conference, she was asked what her thoughts were about her upcoming opponent, Iga Swiatek.

Elina praised Iga for her support of her country by doing everything that is her power and thanked her for being vocal about it. She added that Iga is not only a great champion but also a great person. ‘’She’s a great champion, also a great person. I’m really thankful for her support of Ukrainians, Ukraine, doing everything that is in her power, being vocal about that.’’ Iga had a close-call match herself as she won a three-setter in which two sets went to tiebreaks in the match against Belinda Bencic.

Svitolina was out of the tour for a year. It started as a break due to her back injury and eventually turned into a maternity leave as she gave birth to her and fellow tennis player husband, Gael Monfils‘ daughter. She was back on court just six months after giving birth. She won her first title of the year after her comeback at the Internationaux de Strasbourg tournament for the second time, and her first one was in 2020.

After her comeback, Elina was awarded a wildcard into Wimbledon and she is definitely proving that she belongs here. She is all set to face off against the Polish World No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the quarter-finals tomorrow. Both of them have met only once before this, which was in 2021 at the Rome quarter-finals where Swiatek won in straight sets.

Both of them are hard-hitting baseliners and have a similar playing style. This is Iga’s first quarter-finals here at Wimbledon while for Elina this will be her first after reaching the semi-finals back in 2019. Up until now, Iga has dropped only one set throughout the event, while Elina has dropped two. Looking at their previous matches and how this next round is going to a very important for both of them, it is likely that Iga will win in three sets.
