Elina Svitolina’s remarkable Wimbledon 2023 run added another chapter on Tuesday, as she progressed into the semifinals. The Ukrainian defeated top seed and pre-tournament favorite Iga Swiatek in a three-set thriller to continue her dream run at the Championships.

Svitolina’s husband Gael Monfils is back home, as he is unable to attend her matches at Wimbledon this year. The Frenchman has parenting duties and is recovering in time for the American hard court swing. When asked if Gael Monfils would be present in the stands for the semifinals, the Ukrainian stated that she would want things to continue in the same manner, as she does not want to jinx her run.

Given that Elina Svitolina has not played much tennis over the past year, not many expected her to make it this far at Wimbledon. However, she has exceeded all expectations, defeating three former Grand Slam champions on her way to the last four. She now faces Marketa Vondrousova for a place in the finals.

Svitolina revealed that Monfils is watching her matches back home, alongside his parents. The Frenchman has his pre-match routine as well, as he hopes to be back in time for the 2023 US Open. Hence, she is pretty content with his husband staying home during the tournament.

“I wouldn’t want to change so much the things. I’m not really superstitious, but I don’t want to jinx few things (smiling). He’s happy at home. He’s watching from home with Skai and with my parents, as well. He has his routines as well before my match. He’s also right now recovering and getting ready for the U.S. swing. It’s okay. I let him stay at home for now,” Svitolina said in the press conference.

Elina Svitolina claimed the first set by the closest of margins, before losing the second set in the tiebreaker against Iga Swiatek. However, she bounced back immediately, as she completely outplayed the top seed in the final set. The 28-year-old will now look to make her debut Grand Slam final on Thursday when she faces Marketa Vondrousova. The Czech tennis player is having quite a run herself, getting the better of Jessica Pegula in a tight three-set battle in the quarterfinals.
