Tennis draws have their own set of excitement, but in the current world, this thrill has soared with the possibility of a Ukrainian playing against a Russian or a Belarusian. The tensions between these countries have found their way onto the tennis court, as players stand up for their nations and show minimal respect for their opponents. On that backdrop, the Washington Open that is about to start next week sees an exciting clash between Ukrainian Elina Svitolina and Belarusian Victoria Azarenka.
The pair had just met each other at the Wimbledon Championships. The entire match was extremely competitive. It was a Round of 16 clash wherein Azarenka won the first set 6-2. Svitolina bounced back and took the second set 6-4. Both women were not ready to drop serve in the final set as the match had to be pushed into a tie breaker. The competitiveness and closeness of the match was maintained till finally Svitolina got the 2 point lead and beat her opponent 11-9. The heat continued after the match too.
Svitolina didn’t want to shake hands with her opponent to stand up against the invasion. Knowing that, Azarenka didn’t initiate the handshake and simply waved at her opponent. Funnily enough, the Court 1 crowd didn’t appreciate this and started booing the Belarusian. The tour, after the end of the grass court season, now moves to the North American hard courts. Both players will look to outperform each other and get some good momentum on their side before the start of the US Open.
