Emma Raducanu returned to action after struggling with injuries halfway through the 2023 season. The Brit made a winning comeback to professional tennis after being sidelined for eight months.
Raducanu registered a hard-fought victory over Romanian Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 in the opening round of the 2024 ASB Classic on Tuesday, January 2. Subsequently, the 21-year-old is currently scheduled for a face-off against Elina Svitolina and recently addressed her upcoming encounter.
Raducanu has been absent from the WTA Tour since April last year after going under the knife for corrective surgery on both of her wrists and her left ankle. The Brit’s reward for her triumph is a second-round clash against 2023 Wimbledon semifinal Elina Svitolina.
In a post-match press conference at the New Zealand event, the former World No. 10 spoke highly of the Ukrainian. Raducanu further stressed Svitolina’s laudable performances in the 2023 season and expressed her enthusiasm for facing her next. She said:
I think it’s great I get to play Elina Svitolina. She came back after the break just full on and made the semis of Wimbledon. So I’m really up for it, I’m looking forward to it and for me it’s a match where I have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Former British No. 1 Raducanu is scheduled to lock horns with Svitolina in the Round of 16 of the ASB Classic on Thursday, January 4.
