Emma Raducanu has seen a massive slump in her form since her surprise title win at the 2021 US Open. The Brit took the tennis world by storm after she defeated Leylah Fernandez in two sets, in what was the first all-teenage women’s singles final since the 1999 US Open. Raducanu was the first qualifier, male or female, to win a Grand Slam tournament in the Open Era.

Since the high of that victory, the 20 year-old has struggled to find form due to injury issues. She holds a dismal 5/5 win/loss record for the year as her WTA ranking has seen a massive drop to 280. The young Brit is determined to not get bogged down by the frequent injury setbacks as she talked about her self-belief during an interview with BBC Radio 4.

Raducanu also talked about her mom, Renee. Crediting her Chinese descent for instilling inner belief, Emma said:

I think the confidence comes from just inner belief. My mum comes from a Chinese background, they have very good self-belief. It’s not necessarily about telling everyone how good you are, but it’s about believing it within yourself. I really respect that about the culture.

Emma Raducanu will next play an exhibition event at Macau where she will slowly start making a comeback to professional tennis. She will aim to compete at the 2024 Australian Open with full health and fitness.

Emma Raducanu on the constant chopping and changing of her coaching team

The departure of Andrew Richardson, who played a crucial role in her 2021 US Open victory, followed due to Raducanu’s desire for a coach with more professional tour experience.

She acclaimed her logical reasoning and proactive nature are the reasons she frequently changes coaches.

I ask my coaches a lot of questions. On certain occasions, they haven’t been able to keep up with the questions I’ve asked, and maybe that’s why it ended. It’s something I’ve always done. I keep provoking and asking questions to coaches and challenging their thinking as well.

In the interview, Emma Raducanu opened up about how she is not someone who will blindly follow her coach without reasoning with them. Speaking about this, she further added:

I’m not someone that you can just tell me what do and I’ll do it; I need to understand why and then I’ll do it.
