Tim Henman has claimed that British tennis player Emma Raducanu would be the most disappointed to miss out on the 2023 US Open, having won the tournament two years ago as an 18-year-old. The Briton has been in and out ever since that win and injuries have played a major spoilsport in Raducanu’s quest to be consistent.
The 20-year-old has already had surgery on her both wrists as well as her ankle. Although Raducanu has been practicing lately, she looks far from fit enough to be back on the court. Nevertheless, Henman believes this layoff from mainstream tennis might have worked as a blessing in disguise for the youngster.
Henman has claimed that this elongated break would have provided Raducanu with ample time to work on her physical resilience. The four-time Wimbledon finalist said that Raducanu always had that natural ability and her US Open title is a testimony that. However, the Briton lacks the physical resilience to cope with the demands of the tour.
“She’ll be the most disappointed of anyone not to be at the US Open given her history, but being so young there will be so many opportunities ahead of her. So, this is a great chance for her to kind of build to give her that foundation to be back on the match courts whenever she’s ready,” said Henman (via Daily Express).
Tim Henman backs Emma Raducanu to make a strong comeback
The former British player also backed Raducanu to make a strong comeback. While hailing Emma Raducanu for her tennis, Tim Henman said that he has full faith in the youngster to be among the top players. Henman also took a sly dig at Raducanu’s critics who often claim that her US Open title was a fluke.
“Because you can’t achieve what she achieved without being a phenomenal tennis player and a phenomenal athlete. Her journey was almost back to front, she didn’t have that foundation. She just won on pure natural ability and now the demands of the Tour, playing week in and week out, competing, puts enormous strain on your body. And she’s got to build up that resilience. And I’m sure she’ll do that.”
Emma Raducanu last played in the Stuttgart Open in April. The 20-year-old has tried to make comebacks but her body has let Raducanu down every time. Now, it is to be seen if she justifies the backing and climbs the ladder whenever she returns on the tour.
