Following her stunning US Open victory in 2021, British tennis phenom Emma Raducanu has earned the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award. Raducanu, 19, beat Leylah Fernandez in what became known as ‘The Fairytale of New York’ last September to become the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam tournament in the Open Era.

Emma Raducanu accepted the award while attending the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart. She said, “Thank you so much to the Laureus Academy for voting. It means so much to receive this award and I really want to congratulate my other Nominees. I feel like it’s been a really great year for me but I’ve still got a lot of work to do. Thank you very much”

Li Na, who, like Simona Halep, is a lifelong idol of hers, also sent her a congratulations note. Na is a member of the Laureus Academy and was involved in the selection of the award winner. Raducanu expressed her amazement after seeing the post. “It means very much to this message from you. You’ve been an inspiration for me all my career and I remember watching you. Thank you very much,” she expressed.

After a strenuous stint on the red dirt at the Porsche Tennis Center, Britain’s No. 1 Emma Raducanu had a wonderful time in Stuttgart. The Stuttgart Open was the youngster’s first clay-court competition on the WTA tour, and despite her lack of familiarity on the surface, she performed admirably. In Stuttgart, she reached the quarterfinals before losing to World No. 1 Iga Swiatek.

In a match that lasted over an hour, Emma Raducanu lost 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the WTA Stuttgart Open. To compete quite well in her maiden clay court competition on the WTA tour, the teenager shown incredible perseverance and endurance. The British player beat Storm Sanders in the first round and then beat native opponent Tamara Korpatsch in a three-setter to reach the quarterfinals for the second time since winning the US Open last year.
