Emma Raducanu‘s coaching philosophy has sparked debate in the tennis world, with her agent, Max Eisenbud, maintaining firm in their decision to work with multiple teachers throughout her career. Eisenbud responded to former tennis great John McEnroe‘s worries, emphasizing that both Emma and her father have a clear philosophy and control over coaching decisions, which has been consistent throughout her junior years.
The 20-year-old Briton has worked with several trainers for brief periods of time, resulting in uneven results on the court, ranging from her astounding US Open victory to some less successful outings. Raducanu recently parted ways with Sebastien Sachs, marking the fifth coaching change in less than two years and raising concerns about the stability of her coaching staff.
However, Eisenbud maintains steadfastness in their approach, insisting that the tennis world adopt and comprehend their methods. According to him, Raducanu and her father take a hands-on approach to coaching, which has been their mentality from her junior tennis days.
Last year, John McEnroe raised his concerns about the continuous changes, particularly for a player at Raducanu’s stage of her career. A rotating door of instructors, according to McEnroe, may not be helpful to a player’s long-term growth, especially for someone who has just won a major championship.
“Quite frankly, her dad was the one putting in a lot of the game plans for the matches. People need to get over the fact that that’s what they need to do. It’s probably going to be like that for the rest of her career”, said her agent.
Why did Emma Raducanu part ways with Sebastian Sachs?
Many in the tennis world were taken aback by Emma Raducanu’s decision to cut company with her fifth coach, Sebastian Sachs. Last December, the 20-year-old began working with Sachs, who previously guided Belinda Bencic to an Olympic gold medal in 2021. Despite her appreciation for Sachs and the excellent development they made together, Raducanu noted that due to unforeseen circumstances, they were unable to continue their collaboration at this moment.
The decision was mutual, according to Raducanu’s team, who noted that the young player had been unable to engage in any on-court training for several months due to injuries. They also stated that Raducanu and Sachs had a good relationship, which made the split amicable.
Raducanu’s time with Sachs was limited to just ten matches due to her injuries, leading to their recent split. Raducanu and her team will be seeking the ideal coaching fit to support her as she navigates the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in her bright tennis career once her recovery begins.
