Briton Emma Raducanu has been a curious case for the tennis world. The 21-year-old won a Grand Slam title when no one expected her to. But when the British ace was expected to excel at tournaments, she has been unable to go deeper in tournaments. Along with injuries, the constant chopping and changing in the coaching team has also created problems for the youngster and Patrick Mouratoglou has pointed out how exactly it affects the player.
The Frenchman who worked with American tennis legend Serena Williams for a significant time, has pointed out that while injuries look like the prime reason behind Raducanu missing out on a lot of action, the constant changing in the coaching team is the prime cause.
Mouratoglou has pointed out that to achieve any target, one needs to have stability in their planning. He then spoke about the unpredictability of the tour and how constant changes to the coaching team can be emotionally draining for the Briton.
If she was my daughter, I wouldn't advise her to do that, because you need stability to build something, whatever it is. And even more in tennis, I think it's very important to have a project for your tennis and to follow day after day, the road to achieve what your project, your tennis project is.Patrick Mouratoglou told Eurosport.
So whenever there are changes in terms of coaches, there are the project changes. So you cannot build something. And also you need stability. The tour is the most unstable thing on the planet. Everything changes every week. It's pretty tough emotionally to handle all those changes. The Frenchman further stated.
Patrick Mouratoglou wants Emma Raducanu to find someone who she trusts
Further emphasizing the importance of having stability in the coaching team, Patrick Mouratoglou wished for Emma Raducanu to find someone whom she could trust. Mouratoglou feels that the Briton has the potential to dominate the tour but she needs to sort out the issues with the coaches first.
I wish for her that she finds someone that she trusts enough to be able to keep the team for long enough to achieve something, because the potential we know she has, she's proven it by winning a Grand Slam. But since this happened, nothing has been consistent. I think the results and the injuries are the consequence of this instability that she has had within her team.”Patrick Mouratoglou said.
It is worth mentioning that Emma Raducanu has had five coaches over the last two years and is currently set to enter the 2024 season without a full-time coach. On top of that, her agent Max Eisenbud claimed earlier this year that the constant changing and copping to the coaching team is a “comfortable” approach for Raducanu and her father Ian and hence they can continue with the same approach.
Now, it is to be seen if the Briton and her father listen to what Patrick Mouratoglou has suggested or if they will continue tinkering with the coaching team and keep Raducanu at the risk of injuring herself over and over again.
