Fans on social media had a field day during Novak Djokovic‘s 24th Grand Slam triumph. They called out the hilarity of the situation when the Moderna Shot of the Day went to an unvaccinated Djokovic. ESPN and Moderna had an agreement to air a segment ‘Moderna Shot of the Day’. However, audiences found the situation bizarre when the pharmaceutical company was forced to award this to the unvaccinated Serbian ace.
The Serbian Great had been banned from the United States for the past two years on account of not getting vaccinated. The issue in itself led to quite a few controversies in the 2022 season.
Djokovic played on American soil for the first time in two years at the Cincinnati Masters, where he won the title against Carlos Alcaraz. The last time he played stateside, was in 2021 when he lost to Daniil Medvedev in the US Open final.
The Shot of the Day in question was the stroke the Serb played in the Championship point, which ultimately led to his victory. With this title, Djokovic won his 24th Grand Slam title, equaling the record for the most number of Grand Slam titles in history with Margaret Court. He now also holds the record for the most number of Majors in the Open Era.
