Eugenie Bouchard issued an apology for her “playing dopers in Madrid” tweet she made targeting Maria Sharapova. In the first round at the Madrid Open, the Canadian player defeated Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska in 3 sets. Shortly after the win, she tweeted, “There’s something about playing dopers in Madrid.”

Dayana Yastremska was banned at the end of 2020 on doping charges, which was lifted in 2021. But what Bouchard was slyly hinting at was actually Maria Sharapova. Genie had famously defeated Sharapova back in 2017 at the Madrid Open in 3 sets. Same as Dayana Yastremska, Sharapova had also returned from her doping ban when she played at the Madrid Open.

This tweet by Eugenie Bouchard was wildly disapproved by the tennis fraternity. Within 2 hours of posting it, she deleted the unsavory tweet. Bouchard didn’t win any more matches after round 1 at the Madrid Open 2023 and today finally she tendered an apology on Twitter. It looked like an almost forced apology. The 29-year-old Canadian tweeted “I want to apologize for my tweet yesterday. It was a lapse in judgment, and unnecessary.”

Her tweet created a huge buzz as it re-ignited the feud between her and Maria Sharapova. It was a controversial dig at the 5-time Grand Slam title winner Sharapova. Since Sharapova is a huge tennis favorite, the Tweet didn’t go down very well in the books of tennis fans. In her apology, Bouchard also said, “I’m going to continue to work on myself going forward, both on and off the court.” That means she will weigh her words before tweeting them out.

Most of Genie Bouchard’s success in 2023 came in the Madrid Open itself. After defeating 2 players in the Qualifiers, the player made it through to the main draw. Though she finally fell against Italian player Martina Trevisan in the round of 64. In Australian Open Bouchard she was not able to win the qualifiers to reach round 1. Post that, Bouchard had some success in the Copa Colsanitas tennis tournament in Switzerland, where she won her round of 32.

She participated in an ITF tournament in Portugal called the ITF Portugal 04A. Here too, she had little success, winning only the first round. Looking forward to some more interesting breakthroughs for Bouchard this year. And more positive news from the player who once was the one to watch out, especially in 2014 when she reached the semi-final of both the French and Australian Open.
