Eugenie Bouchard
Canadian tennis player Eugenie Bouchard recently took to social media to explain her early retirement decision in her match against Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina at the Translyvania Open in Cluj, Romania. According to Bouchard, she retired in order to not worsen her injury and be able to play the Guadalajara1000 qualification round starting on Saturday.
“I got an MRI yesterday, and didn’t show anything too bad, so I thought I could play. But it was getting worse as the match went on. To avoid a big injury, I figured it would be best to retire. I absolutely hate retiring, I wish I could’ve done better here. But I hope to be back,” Bouchard also told reporters.
Bouchard has over 2.3 million followers on Instagram and since her initial professional tennis days when she was regularly making quarterfinals and even semifinals of Grand Slam tournaments, the Canadian hasn’t been a touch of her past self on the court, regularly plagued by injuries.
“Don’t have to pose naked” – Chris Evert takes a dig at Maria Sharapova and Eugenie Bouchard
Chris Evert, the 67-year-old American former tennis professional is widely regarded as one of the greatest female tennis players of all time. With 18 grand slam titles to her name, Evert has her name etched among the all-time greats of the sport. The American icon had some amazing moments and rivalries throughout her career.
In a recent interview, Evert took a dig at good-looking players like Maria Sharapova and Eugenie Bouchard. The tennis legend also shared her thoughts on how beauty standards have changed with time.
She said, “I used to get people commenting on my weight all the time. I was always conscious of that. Nothing has changed. It got to the point where athletes weren’t supposed to have an ounce of fat on them, an extra inch. It hurt my feelings. I think we are all pretty sensitive. When you’re young and in the limelight, it takes some getting used to.“
“If you look like Maria Sharapova or Eugenie Bouchard, you’re always going to have companies coming after you with endorsements, because companies like successful women who are good-looking. That’s the way it’s always been. It’s the women’s choice how they want to come across, but you don’t have to pose naked. It should be enough that – no matter how you look – you are successful because of hard work and doing what you love to do,“ Evert added.
