Canadian tennis player Eugenie Bouchard has probably been the biggest disappointment on the women’s tennis circuit over the past decade. ‘Genie’ rose to fame in 2014 as she became the first Canadian-born player representing Canada to make it into a Grand Slam singles final. This led to calls for her to be the next ‘big thing’ in women’s tennis. But, since then her career hasn’t taken off as expected.
Recently, Bouchard took part in the qualifiers for the US Open 2023. She was beaten by Dayana Yastremska in the second round of the qualifiers. Bouchard has not made a single Grand Slam main draw appearance this year and was knocked out of the qualifiers at the Australian Open and Wimbledon and withdrew from the French Open.
The Canadian made headlines again but for all the wrong reasons. In a surprise announcement, the Pickleball Tour announced that she has signed up for the tour starting in 2024. This led many fans to believe that she had dumped tennis for pickleball.
The Pickleball chiefs are touting the ex-world No. 5’s switch to their professional circuit as “one of the biggest signings of the year”.
Fans on social media lash out on Eugenie Bouchard for picking up Pickleball career

Bouchard’s decision to switch careers has received widespread condemnation from fans on social media. Most of the fans claimed that her consistent decline over the past few years means that she will not be a big loss for women’s tennis. Many of Bouchard’s 2.4 million Instagram followers bemoaned the “sad moment”. “Wimby finalist. Not bad @ppatour LFG!” reacted John Isner on Instagram.
Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans have to say:
Bouchard isn’t the only tennis player to make a similar switch in their career recently. Last week, Jack Sock wrapped up his final US Open, having confirmed he was officially trading in a racquet for a paddle.
