In a surprising turn of events, Eugenie Bouchard joins Serena Williams in taking a dig at Simona Halep. The Romanian was given a 4-year ban from professional tennis after she was caught doping by having taken a substance called Roxadustat in last year’s US Open. Since then the team of Halep have tried to back their player but the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) has made its decision a ban her.

Canadian Eugenie Bouchard has been the next tennis player after Serena Williams to take a dig at Halep. “ I was told not to tweet today,” tweeted Bouchard. The Canadian has not been shy to express her opinions and has previously spoken about Maria Sharapova and Dayana Yastremska. The Russian Sharapova was banned in 2016 and returned in 2017 to lose to Bouchard in the Wimbledon. After the match, the Canadian called her opponent a cheater. “She is a cheater and so, to me, I don’t think a cheater in any sport should be allowed to play that sport again. It’s so unfair to all the other players who do it the right way.” said a fired-up Bouchard.

Fans were genuinely unhappy with her comments and had backlashes on her by roasting her tweets. “When was the last time you won a tennis match, babe,” hilariously commented under the player’s tweet. Bouchard’s stand against doping has been unfaltering, adding her weight to the criticism of Halep. Serena Williams was also another player, who slyly commented against Halep. “8 is a better number” tweeted the American.

Dayana Yastremska was also on the firing end of Bouchard’s tweets

Dayana Yastremska, the Ukrainian tennis player was banned in 2021 after the World Anti-Doping Agency found a banned substance in her urine sample. She returned in the Madrid open this year to lose to the Canadians. “There’s something about playing dopers in Madrid,” tweeted Bouchard after seizing another opportunity to target players. She had to take down the tweet after the suspension was lifted and received a lot of backlash from fans.

Reiterating the importance of sportsmanship, Bouchard’s criticism of Halep’s ban adds to the increasing discussion about doping and its place in the sporting world. As she takes her stance along with Serena Williams, it becomes clear that the fight against Doping is far from over.
