Canadian player Eugenie Bouchard was denied a wildcard by the Canadian Open this year. This means that the former Wimbledon finalist will have to play the qualifying rounds to earn her place in the main draw at her home tournament.
The news has come as a surprise to few, given how the 29-year-old has been out of form for quite a while, with a current ranking of No. 215. She dropped out of the top 100 in 2019 owing to injuries.
The Canadian Open has decided to hand wildcards to five players in total this year, which includes three Canadian players currently in the top 100, but not highly ranked enough to get a spot in the main draw. The three players are 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez, 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu, and former World No. 38 Rebecca Marino.
The other two wildcards this year are 7 – time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams, who is possibly in the twilight of her career and may announce retirement soon. The final wildcard is former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki, who has come out of a 3-year retirement to come back to the WTA tour.
Fans agree with the tournament’s decision, criticize Bouchard’s recent form
Given her current form and her reputation, it does not seem far-fetched that players with a decent record on the tour like Andreescu and Fernandez were chosen over Bouchard for wildcard appearances. Fans took to Twitter to express their opinion on the same.
In spite of her problem with injuries, ‘Genie’ Bouchard has been called out before for not committing to the sport. Ever since her dream season of 2014, fans have noticed that Bouchard has made ventures in modeling and hasn’t worked on her game as much as she once used to.
