Roger Federer and Eugenie Bouchard

Canadian Former World No.5 Eugenie Bouchard is one of the top fans of the Swiss Maestro Roger Federer. She had always been open about her fan worship of the 20-time Grand Slam Champion who recently retired at the 2022 Laver Cup.

Bouchard has always been vocal about her obsession with Roger Federer and when she says that nobody can match up with Federer’s level in inspiring people, she has taken this to a new level. Bouchard talked about Federer’s legacy and being an inspiration herself.

Well, I mean, the way I look at Roger, I don’t know if that can be replicated by anyone. If there are children who look up to me, I’ve always said so throughout my career: it’s just an honor. I remember being that little girl, admiring the players, wanting their autograph, watching them on TV.

“It’s an honor to be that person for someone else. I appreciate the support. I hope I can inspire people to go out, play tennis, do sports“, said (translated using Google) the current World No.430 in an interview given after her first-round victory in the WTA-1000 Guadalajara Open.

Bouchard is coming after 17 months due to a shoulder injury that knocked her out of the tour in March 2021 and the victory here over American World No.194 Kayla Day in the first round of the Guadalajara open was her first win in a WTA-1000 tournament since the comeback on August 2022.

She lost in the next round in 3 sets to the Latvian World No.23 Jelena Ostapenko. Bouchard had shocked the tennis world in the 2014 Wimbledon Championships when she became the first Canadian player ever to reach the final of a grand slam tournament and finished as the runner-up to the Czech Tennis Icon Petra Kvitova.

She also reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open and French Open in 2014 and reached a career-high ranking of 5. For the great season at the age of 20, she was also awarded the WTA Most Improved Player. After a remarkable 2014 season, she started losing the rhythm in the next years and went down in the rankings.

Things got rather complicated with a shoulder injury that occurred in 2021 March. Post the comeback in August this year, she was able to win only 6 matches out of 13 as she looks to return to double-digit rankings next season.
