Russian World No.4 Daniil Medvedev will face the Austrian Super star Dominic Thiem in the pre-quarterfinals of the ATP-500 Vienna Open. We were expecting this match-up in the finals of the Grand Slams 2 years back but times have changed, not in a good way for the Austrian as he is coming back from the wrist injury and is currently ranked Number 113.

Dominic Thiem was constantly challenging the Big 3 and eventually won his first Grand Slam at the 2020 US Open. However, in a rather unfortunate turn of events, just when he was about to get the recognition he deserved after grinding himself for years, disaster happened in the form of a wrist injury during the Mallorca championships in 2021.
The Grand slam tournaments he played this year ended in first-round losses in both the French Open and US open. Despite the poor run in grand slam matches, he was able to reach the finals of Rennes Challenger 2022 when he eventually lost in straight sets to French World No.106 Ugo Humbert.
Though he lost in the 2nd round in the Metz Open and Tel Aviv Open after that, he was able to reach the semi-finals of the Gijon Open and European Open last week where he lost to Russian World No.8 Andrey Rublev and American World No.36 Sebastian Korda respectively.
Quarter-final wins against the Polish world No.11 Hubert Hurkacz after saving 3 match points in the Antwerp open and previous round victory in the ongoing tournament against American World No.30 Tommy Paul after coming back from 2-5 in the third set and then saving two match points were his best matches of the season that can boost his confidence level up.
After a heartbreaking loss to Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open Final this year after leading by two sets, Medvedev has never been the same player as before. The deadliest backhands that stopped the mighty Novak Djokovic in US Open final 2021 have declined since the loss to Nadal this year.
Nevertheless, he was coming back to his best in recent months but the pre-quarterfinal loss to Nick Kyrgios in US Open, 2022 again stopped his momentum. Following that, he recently got defeated by the Swiss Veteran Stanislas Wawrinka in the ATP-250 Metz Open in 3 sets in the first round.
All losses apart, he was dictating the play in the semi-finals against Novak Djokovic in ATP-500 Astana Open, a muscle strain got him down and he was forced to retire from the match. Medvedev was leading by a set and the second set was being played when he got the strain. After that unfortunate event, this is his first tournament.

It had been a tough year for Medvedev considering the standard he set for himself by demolishing Novak Djokovic in the 2021 US Open Final. But he is back in the zone as we could see in the Astana Open where a muscle strain prevented him from a potential win over the Serbian again. Thiem on the other hand has risen from the coffin and his two nail-biting victories in the Gijon Open and the Vienna Open after saving match points will be his strength to go forward. Expect this to be a contest between fire and ice.
