Rafael Nadal will return to the field at the Madrid Open on May 1 after an injury layoff that kept him out for more than a month. The Spaniard, who suffered a stress fracture in his ribcage last month at the Indian Wells Open, is a five-time winner at the tournament and will be seeking to improve his form ahead of the French Open.
Tennis specialists Justine Hennin, Patrick Mouratoglou, and Michael Llodra from France Televisions discussed how far Rafael Nadal could go in the next French Open.
“He will not arrive at the top”- Patrick Mouratoglou
Patrick Mouratoglou, a well-known coach and sports commentator, believes that Nadal’s lack of match practice will hinder his advancement in the French Open.
“Rafael Nadal isn’t going to play a lot of matches, and it’s extremely rare that he arrives at Roland with so few games. So, for Roland-Garros, there is a real unknown for him. Despite his incredible start to the season, he is a player who has always needed to play a lot. It will not arrive at the top,” analyzed Patrick Mouratoglou.
Rafael Nadal confirms Madrid Masters return
After fracturing his rib during his Indian Wells semi-final, Rafael Nadal revealed that he will be out for four to six weeks, but that he will be back in action at the Madrid Masters next week. However, the Spaniard does not appear to be completely clean, as he admitted to arriving before he was fully prepared to participate once more.
“Despite arriving just before preparation and being difficult, I really want to play and play at home since the opportunities are few. To try to do it in the best possible way. See you in Madrid,” he tweeted on Tuesday.
It comes after his uncle and longtime coach Toni Nadal revealed that the 21-time Major champion planned to travel to Madrid and assess his form and fitness before deciding whether or not to compete. Last Monday, the five-time Madrid winner returned to a tennis court for the first time in four weeks and is already planning to compete again.
