Rafael Nadal secured a place in the third round of the US Open after defeating Fabio Fognini in four sets. People saw Nadal come back after being down a set with the Italian leading the second set as well. He then defeated Fognini,  2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 at the beautiful Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The Spaniard is eyeing a fifth US Open title this year and is looking to extend his lead in the grand slam race as he currently holds 23 grand slam titles. Nadal gave himself and the fans a scare today after he suddenly stopped the game in the final set and immediately walked off the court for a medical timeout. Turns out, he cut his nose with his own racket after it bounced off the court. Fans then took to Twitter to express their concerns but not all of them. Some fans got bitter and accused Nadal of faking an injury.

In the post-match interview, Nadal gave an update on his nose injury. He said, “Well, yeah, just a little bit dizzy at the beginning, a little bit painful.” But the World No. 3 did admit that he has hurt his nose before but not while playing tennis. He said, “[I’ve done it before] with a golf club, but not with a tennis racquet.”

Nevertheless, fans had quite a reaction to what could’ve been a huge injury. Nadal has been already suffering from an abdominal injury which took him out of Wimbledon this year. Some fans displayed genuine concerns while others just blabbered on about another fake injury.

He later said in the press conference, “I lost little bit the – I don’t know how to say in English – but a little bit of the feeling of my head. It’s about being a little bit out of the world. I don’t know, seems like it is not broken. I am not sure yet. I don’t know. I think it’s getting bigger and bigger. That’s just a shock, in some way I deserved it [for] playing that bad for a while (laughter). No, I’m joking.”

Nadal will be facing Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the third round of the US Open.
