Rublev was 100% wrong. This is Serena @US Open but much worse. The big losers were the fans who paid good money to watch a tennis match and instead were treated to an adolescent temper tantrum and little tennis. Rublev should be made to rerun every single ticket. The user wrote on X.
What was the Serena Williams 2018 US Open final controversy and how is it different from the Andrey Rublev incident?
As the comparison has been drawn, it is necessary to examine how similar Andrey Rublev getting defaulted and Serena Williams’ 2018 US Open final outburst are. Talking about the reasons, Andrey Rublev got defaulted for swearing at the line judge. On the other hand, Williams was first penalized for allegedly getting help from her then-coach Patrick Mouratoglou.
The 23-time Grand Slam was accused of cheating by chair umpire Carlos Ramos which infuriated the American ace. Williams openly declared that she had never cheated and would rather lose the match. She also smashed her racket onto the court, inviting a second code violation. A third violation was imposed after the chair umpire accused her of verbal abuse.
This meant that Serena would lose a point and eventually a game. The 23-time Grand Slam champion went on to lose the match in straight sets. While she had calmed the nerves by the time for interviews and presentation, Williams was raging during the match. Have a look at what all unfolded below.
The tennis fraternity was divided the same way it is now. While some sided with the legend, a few felt Williams and Mouratoglou should have known about the rules better.
