Joao Fonseca put off a superb performance in the ongoing Rio Open. After receiving a wild-card entry in his second ATP Tour-level tournament, the Brazilian player reached the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Fonseca shattered numerous records in the tournament becoming the only player to beat a top-50 player by a margin of 6-0 before turning 18. However, besides his on-court skills and performances, the Brazilian is really a cool personality off the field.
Joao Fonseca is loved immensely by the home crowd of Rio de Janeiro. Even after his loss on Friday, he was surrounded by fans all around for autographs. During this, one of the fans casually took off the hat from his head. The Brazilian silently noticed it before laughing it off and saying that he could keep it. This was a superb gesture from the 17-year-old.
Fonseca has shown promising signs for a 17-year-old. After being sponsored by the Roger Federer-backed ‘On’ last year, the Brazilian ended the last season with the World No.1 ranking in juniors. Besides, he also won the junior US Open title. After these superb performances of the 17-year-old, ‘On’ is receiving great appreciation for their superb scouting.
Joao Fonseca loses to Mariano Navone in the quarterfinals of the Rio Open
After a superb performance in the previous matches and a big win against Arthur Fils, Fonseca advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament. He was set to face Mariano Navone. Fonseca dominated the first set of the match, beating the Argentine 6-2. However, he couldn’t capitalize and lost the next two sets.
With this, the 17-year-old’s dream home run came to an end. However, his win against Arthur Fils will be scripted in the history books.
With this, he ensured his ATP, ranking his at least 450. Moreover, Fonseca is just getting started and his performance will only get better with time.
