Aryna Sabalenka had a great 2023 season, where she won her first major Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. The Belarusian also acquired the world No.1 ranking for numerous weeks dethroning Iga Swiatek.
After a superb 2023 season, Sabalenka started the new season in the Brisbane International. She was set to face Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti in the Round of 32 of the tournament.
Sabalenka produced a smashing performance in her first match of the year, beating Bronzetti in straight sets to advance to the Round of 16 stages of the tournament. In the first set, Sabalenka scored four aces and broke the opponent’s serve in the sixth game.
After the win in the post-match conference, the 2023 Australian Open winner praised the fans for showing support towards her. She also took a slight dig at the New York crowd who booed her in the US Open final match against Coco Gauff.
In the interview, she said,
I'm super happy to be back in Brisbane, Australia. I really missed you so much in all the Slams. Guys, if I would have your support at the US Open, probably I would win that one. Can you come at the US Open next year?
Mixed reactions follow up on social media after Aryna Sabalenka’s post-match interview
After the statements, the fans erupted with different reactions on Twitter. While one group of fans believes that the crowd indeed was against her that day, the other group asked her to move on from the loss.
However, it is part and parcel of the game, and Coco Gauff, an American, will obviously get the advantage of the crowd. Check out how fans reacted after the latest comments by Sabalenka.
In the finals of the US Open, Sabalenka made a solid start to the game, winning the first set. However, Gauff came back strongly by winning the next two sets and clinching the title at the hands of the Belarusian. However, now she can return the favor to Gauff in the Australian Open, where she has a very good record, unlike Gauff.
