The 2023 French Open has already seen some high-profile withdrawals. If Rafael Nadal’s withdrawal was already not enough, Andy Murray also announced his decision to skip the Grand Slam in Paris. The three-time Major champion has set his sights on the grass-court season which begins right after the French Open.
Andy Murray last competed at the Roland Garros back in 2020, where he was humbled by Stan Wawrinka in straight sets in the first round. The veteran did not enjoy a productive clay court season this year, as he was knocked out in the first rounds in Madrid, Monte Carlo, and Rome.
Perhaps the only positive result in the last couple of months was the title he claimed at a Challenger Event in France. He defeated Tommy Paul in the finals, after coming back from a set down. Fans on social media were quick to use their humor, suggesting that Novak Djokovic would be a relieved man after Andy Murray’s withdrawal from the French Open.

Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic locked horns against each other in the finals of the French Open in 2016. The Serbian claimed the victory, which meant that he won his maiden French Open title after a string of unsuccessful attempts. Fans connected that game and joked about Andy Murray’s recent withdrawal, claiming that Novak Djokovic would not have to worry about his fierce rival.
Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic had a disappointing exit from the 2023 Italian Open. The Serb was defeated by eventual runner-up, Holger Rune in the quarterfinals, as he enters the French Open as the third seed. The former World No. 1 has struggled during the course of the clay-court season, and it seems that he is not at his 100% physically.
Novak Djokovic reached the semifinals of the French Open last season, where he was defeated by Rafael Nadal in four sets. The Serb has claimed two titles on the red clay in Paris, with the latest one being a five-set victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the finals in 2021.
