Holger Rune emerged victorious in a fierce Munich Open final against Botic van de Zandschulp. The 19-year-old saved 4 Championship points off of Botic to ultimately claim victory. However, Holger Rune’s talent is not the topic of discussion since yesterday. People seem more interested in his shoulder and ankle injuries. And whether it was REAL or FAKE? Twitter went into a tizzy with many ridiculing the Danish player for faking multiple injuries. Even the injury he suffered on the court while playing.
In the third set, when Botic van de Zandschulp was serving for the championship, Holger Rune twisted his ankle on the score 30-40. He broke Botic’s service game with the third set score tying at 5-5. He later called a Medical Time Out and was looked after by a physio. Since then, Twitter was set ablaze by haters calling Holger Rune an ‘Impostor’. The Tennis Letter posted the clipping of when he twisted the ankle to come out in the defense of the young star.
In 2022, the two players met in the same setting at the finals of the Munich Open. But last year it was Vandeschulp who suffered an injury and retired in the first set itself. Holger defended his 2022 title this year in the most fashionable way.
Holger Rune’s talent trumps hate
When the Tennis Letter posted the video of his injury, scores of fans came to Rune’s rescue to defend him from his doubters. Some fans were quite upset with people taking a dig at a 19-year-old, saying he is very young yet he is subjected to a great amount of hate.
At the same time, other fans just called a spade a spade. They were just commenting to say that the injury did look real. And how such injuries can be really painful and interfere with the match. Yet the young Dane played and even won the match.
Some fans also brought into light the real problem tennis, and players are facing these days. Tennis has somehow become more about the personalities and less about the talent they show on the court. Fans are quick to judge, but the truth is that the young generation is proving that they are going to elevate their game. And take tennis to the next level.
Holger Rune and Carlos Alcaraz, who also defended his Barcelona title yesterday, are considered the torchbearers of tennis. People are waiting to see how their game and future will turn out.
