“Karma delivers” Fans of Novak Djokovic rejoice as Rafael Nadal is knocked out of second round of 2023 Australian Open
The World No.5's path to his 22nd Grand Slam title has become easier due to Rafael Nadal's elimination and fans believe this is karma at play
Novak Djokovic, Scott Morrison and Rafael Nadal
Sports journalist Sam Street tweeted that with former Aussie Prime Minister Scott Morrison out of the government and Rafael Nadal out of the 2023 Australian Open in round two, the path for Novak Djokovic’s tenth Australian Open title has become easier. He says this amounts to justice for the Serbian legend as he was mistreated during the deportation drama of last year.
Fans of Djokovic were quick to back up Street’s claims and believed that this was karma for Djokovic. Many criticized Morrison for his handling of the case. One said,” Scott Morrison lost me the moment he kicked out Djokovic, showed he was desperate and willing to do anything to win some popularity, even if it meant a baseless witch hunt to undermine rights, freedom and personal choice.” Another wrote,” Karma delivers ?♀️.”
They were left more confused by the mention of Nadal in the tweet. But some were criticizing the Spaniard too. “What does Rafa have to do with anything that happened to Novak last year? Low of you to include him,” one user wrote. Another wrote,” Djokovic kicking Nadal’s arse in the final would have been the fairytail, but Nadal pulled a heartlidge instead.”
The reaction shows fans’ feelings about Djokovic’s treatment during the 2022 Australian Open. The Serbian was first detained, then deported after he had been granted entry into the country even though he was unvaccinated. The case caught the world’s attention and entered the legal realm. Djokovic won one legal battle but was later deported as he was called an “inspiration for the anti-vaccine crowd.”
Djokovic later did an interview with the BBC where he called the matter in Australia the most challenging period of his life. He stated he was not against people taking the vaccine as he was framed. He had decided not to take the shot as he was careful about what he put in his body and did not think the vaccine was right. Djokovic returned to a warm welcome in Melbourne to win his first-round clash at the 2023 Australian Open.
