Emma Raducanu, the 19-year-old Britisher won the 2022 ESPY for the best athlete women’s tennis award beating Ashleigh Barty, Iga Swiatek, and Leylah Fernandez. The 19-year-old sensation is super popular in the tennis world after she won the US Open last year just being 18 years of age.

The Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards or the ESPY is a set of awards given out by ABC (American Broadcast Network), ABC took the rights of the awards from ESPN after 2020. The men’s award in Tennis was taken home by 22-time Grand Slam winner, Rafael Nadal whereas Raducanu took the award in the female category beating out tough competition in the process.

Raducanu winning the award was not taken in good spirits by enthusiasts on Twitter as they branded the award as a ‘popularity contest’ and not something that is given to the actual best player of the year. Fans rooted for Barty or Swiatek to take the award as they had a much more successful 2022 than Emma Raducanu.

The 19-year-old was unable to build on her exploits from last year as she faced a difficult time in building up this year and faced second-round exits from all three majors this year, she will be looking to change that as the US Open is just around the corner and Raducanu will surely be working hard to defend her title.

Emma Raducanu was on the entry list for the US Open along with many big names from the women’s circuit including Iga Swiatek, Serena Williams, and many others, it will be no easy task for the 19-year-old if she is looking to defend her title and win her second Grand Slam title.
